Porcelain Veneers Q & A
What are porcelain veneers?
Veneers are thin shells made out of porcelain that bond to the surface of your teeth to cover imperfections and change their shape, length, or color. These wafer-like dental prosthetics are shaped and sized to fit your existing teeth.
Not only are porcelain veneers natural-looking, but they are also stain-resistant, so you don’t have to worry about dulling them with coffee, tea, or red wine. Unlike composite veneers, which typically last for no longer than eight years and are made in-office, porcelain veneers can last for 20 years or more before they need to be replaced. Porcelain veneers are created at a special dental lab.
What are porcelain veneers used for?
Brilliance Family Dental recommends porcelain veneers to correct the following dental concerns:
- Chipped teeth
- Cracked or broken teeth
- Severe tooth discoloration
- Teeth worn down by grinding (bruxism)
- Large gaps in teeth
- Misshapen teeth
- Crooked teeth
Many people choose veneers to create a “Hollywood” smile that looks bright, white, and uniform.
How are porcelain veneers placed?
If you opt for porcelain veneers to transform your smile, expect to come into Brilliance Family Dental for at least two visits. While Dr. Helton can place composite veneers in one visit, porcelain veneers are custom-made in an outside lab to match the exact shape and color of your natural teeth.
During the first appointment, Dr. Helton prepares your teeth for the veneers by removing a small portion of enamel to make room for the new porcelain surface. Because veneers are extremely thin, very little – if any – enamel will need to be removed to ensure the veneer looks as natural as possible.
Next, the team takes impressions of your teeth and sends them to the laboratory to create your new veneers. It typically takes about two weeks to fabricate veneers, so you may be fitted for temporary veneers to protect your teeth in the meantime.
When you return, Dr. Helton cleans and etches your teeth to help your new porcelain veneers adhere. This helps ensure they completely bond to your teeth. Once the fit, color, and size look and feel perfect, the porcelain veneers are cemented in place.
Caring for porcelain veneers is as easy as caring for your natural teeth. Make sure you brush and floss twice a day, use an antiseptic mouthwash, and schedule bi-annual dental exams with Brilliance Family Dental.
